Durability note Technivorm Moccamaster KB 741

13+ years and never been serviced

The Moccamaster has never been repaired. Never had a part replaced. The heating element still hits brewing temperature consistently, the carafe seal is intact, and the on/off switch works as it always has. The only maintenance has been descaling every few months with citric acid. For a machine bought around 2012 and used daily, that track record is the whole argument for the brand.

Durability note Sage Dual Boiler BES920

8 months in — dialled in, no issues

Eight months of daily use — typically two to three shots in the morning, occasional afternoon pulls. No faults, no error codes, nothing unexpected. The PID is stable and the pre-infusion profile I settled on early has stayed consistent. The steam boiler is the part of the machine I underestimated initially: having steam always ready without waiting changes the workflow more than I expected. The drip tray fills faster than on the Dedica, which is the only mild nuisance. Still calibrating grind settings as I work through different roasts.

Five years on — still the daily driver at the desk

Over five years since purchase and the XM3 still functions exactly as it did on day one. No battery degradation I can notice in daily use. The ear cushions show real wear — the surface material has worn down in places and the foam has compressed — and the finish has worn slightly on the headband where handling is most frequent. None of this affects function or comfort; they are still comfortable for long sessions. The noise cancellation remains genuinely impressive. The device-switching annoyance has never been fixed — still requires manually re-pairing when switching between devices. Fully functional, visibly used, no reason to replace them.

Durability note Wolverine 1000 Mile Plain-Toe Boot

13 years in — leather better than new

Thirteen years of Nordic fall and winter use. The Chromexcel leather has developed a deep patina that no new boot can replicate — it absorbs conditioner readily and the surface has that slightly waxy, lived-in character that Horween leather is known for. Recently cleaned, treated with Saphir Renovateur, and finished with Médaille d’Or — the response to proper care is immediate and visible. They look fantastic. The welt is solid, the sole has been replaced once, no stitching failures, no structural issues. The leather only gets better with more use and the right maintenance.

Resale update De'Longhi Dedica EC685.M

Sold for 500 SEK after four years

Sold the Dedica EC685 in September 2025 after upgrading to the Sage Dual Boiler. It still worked perfectly — no faults, no repairs, nothing replaced. Sold via Blocket for 500 SEK, which puts the net cost of four years of daily use at 1,069 SEK. The buyer was also upgrading from a capsule machine, which felt like the right handover.

Resale update Graef CM900EU Silver

Sold alongside the De'Longhi upgrade

Sold the Graef CM900 when upgrading to the Eureka Mignon Specialità. It was in full working order — burrs were still sharp, the stepless adjustment still smooth. Got 400 SEK on Blocket. A grinder at this price point holding its resale value at roughly 22% after four years is about what to expect; the Specialità will do better given the build quality gap.
